About this site
ExamenStart makes practice material for official exams that decide whether someone may study, work or live in a country. We are an independent site: we are not connected to, approved by or sponsored by any exam authority, and we are not a language school.
Where the questions come from
The official question banks of these exams are not public. The Dutch KNM exam has two official practice exams; the German AEVO exam has a single published sample set of 48 tasks. Neither includes an explanation of why an answer is right, and neither is a full question bank.
So we write our own. Every question is based on the publicly available official syllabus — for KNM the learning objectives published in the Staatscourant, for AEVO the competencies listed in § 3 of the Ausbilder-Eignungsverordnung — and every question carries the source it rests on. That way you can check the reasoning rather than trust it.
We do not copy, translate, reproduce or lightly adapt any official exam material. Where we mention it, we link to it so you can download it from the official source yourself.
How we check the material
A question is only useful if its answer is actually right. For the German AEVO material we took the competency texts verbatim from the official regulation and verified them character by character against the official publication. Every cited article was then checked individually against the official legal text; where an article number did not exist or did not say what the question claimed, we corrected the question.
We also keep official fact and practice apart. For the AEVO exam, for instance, the regulation does not state how many questions the written part has, does not mention fill-in-the-blank questions, and does not set the exam fee. Those are practices of the individual chambers. Our pages say so, instead of presenting practice as law.
If you find something that looks wrong — a wrong answer, an article that does not fit, an unclear wording — write to us. We check every report against the official text and correct the question if it is wrong.
The exam sites
- KNM — Netherlands(NL site, 40 questions in 45 minutes)
- AEVO — Germany(DE site, 80 questions in 180 minutes)
Each exam site is written in the language of that exam, because that is the language the exam itself is in. This English page is the overview; use the selector at the top to move between the sites.
What we do not promise
- No pass guarantee. We provide practice material, not a result. We do not know your exam board and we do not know how it marks an individual paper.
- No legal advice. The citations are evidence for a practice question. For anything about your own situation, ask the authority that runs your exam.
- Not an official source. Rules, fees, deadlines and admission requirements are set by the exam authority and can change. Always check with them.
Buying and refunds
Paid access is a one-time payment per exam, not a subscription, and there is no automatic renewal. Each exam is sold separately — buying one does not unlock another. Payments are handled by Creem, which acts as merchant of record: it is your contracting party, issues the invoice and handles refunds. Access is provided through a cookie rather than an account; you can restore it at any time with the email address you paid with.
